“Greenkeeper Andrew Knott climbs into to pen about aeration research”
Investigating the effects of aeration on greens infiltration Golf is no longer seen as a seasonal sport. Due to the increasing year-round demand for summer-quality putting greens, there is a need for fast-draining surfaces to properly drain rainwater. Good aeration is more important than ever. But how do you achieve the right degree of aeration with the different pens that are in circulation? That's the big question facing all greenkeepers.

"The British should not think that they have a monopoly on wisdom, just because our country has so many golf courses"
Greenkeeper of the Year nominee Andrew Knott, works at De Turfvaert golf course as head greenkeeper. He is highly intelligent, but at the same time decisive greenkeeper who dedicates his working life to making the profession more efficient. He does this by practicing practical science all day long. Even after working hours, he wants to share his acquired knowledge as much as possible. The results do not disappear in a desk drawer, but he uses them to tighten up the maintenance at De Turfvaert.

“Interview, for the Netherlands Greenkeeper Association”
How did you come into contact with the greenkeeper professional?. From the age of 16 I had been playing golf weekly of and on, at a local course near to my home in England. It was later on after I had returned from backpacking. When I was looking for a job which was in a natural setting and provided a possibility to work in different countries. With one of my friends doing greenkeeping work at the time, he recommended it, so I enrolled in a Foundation Degree in Sports Turf Science at Myerscough College. This provided me with two theoretical years of learning and one practical year. For my practical year I worked at Vallentuna golf course in Sweden, which was great. The team were super friendly, and taught me how the day to day maintenance of a golf course was achieved.

“Clip Volume - Taking measurement in the course”
Video demonstration how to take Clipping measurements while in the golf course. Measuring clipping volume, aids the greenkeeper to make educated maintenance decisions based on data. I hoped this video would motivate other greenkeepers to start taking Clipping Volume measurement, as i believe it is the most useful onsite measurement to take for a Head greenkeeper.
